SCHOOL & PTO NEWS
A MESSAGE FROM RUTH FINN OSHIN, WIS PTO PRESIDENT
LAST CALL to buy your Memorial Day Fair T-shirts and discounted advance sale tickets! Remember that this is our largest fundraiser of the year and how we pay for supplemental learning tools and programming for our students, teachers, and our community. We are close to selling out of T's so we really mean business when we say ORDER NOW!
Thanks to Jean Zech and Karen Kallins for running such an amazing event for the WIS Staff and to so many parents who volunteered in some capacity. Not only did they rally the troops and secure a record number of volunteers to bring in delicious food, arrange flowers, and supervise lunch and recess, they even came in under budget and prepared the most comprehensive event recap that I have ever seen within 8 hours of the end of the event. Cathy Greene also deserves a big thank you for organizing the telegram program once again. She collected and distributed 200 adorable telegrams at WIS, Hurlbutt and even the bus garage and managed to raise $167 in "piggy bank" money for our school. Here is a very nice email from Ms. Kurjiaka to remind us all how meaningful the day is to our staff and also a teaching moment for our children about expressing gratitude:
I just wanted to take a moment to thank the PTO for coordinating such a memorable Teacher Appreciation Day yesterday. The flowers I received are beautiful and add just the right splash of color to my classroom. I was overwhelmed by the number of volunteers who contributed to the event by working on the telegrams, taking our duties, preparing lunch, creating bouquets, and so much more.
Thank you for being so thoughtful. Lisbeth Kurjiaka, Grade 5
I wanted to share a little information with all of you about FREE bowling all summer long at Nutmeg Bowl in Fairfield. Go to kidsbowlfree.com to register your kids for 2 free games a day from now until the end of the summer. I tested this out last summer and it really is true.
Since we all love free things, Rita Shey, parent of Sammie in 5th grade, came up with a great idea to exchange books before the summer so our kids have new books to read all summer long. If every child can bring in 5 books that they have read and think other children in the classroom would enjoy reading, then they can select 5 new books to take home for the summer. Please let me know if you are interested in helping us get this summer book exchange up and running during the first week of June
Warm Regards,
Ruth Oshin,
STAFF APPRECIATION DAY A HUGE SUCCESS!!
Thank you so much to all of our incredible volunteers, who came together to make this a very special day for our teachers and staff at WIS. With the help of 140 volunteers, we showered the staff with flowers, served them an extraordinary lunch, and assumed their lunch and recess monitoring duties for the day. They were all truly grateful for the outpouring of support. We would like to extend a special thank you to our very generous sponsors: Peter's Market, who donated a delicious assortment of sandwiches, and Panera Bread, who supplied wonderful bagels and spreads. We are lucky to have such a giving and supportive community.
Jean Zech and Karen Kallins
